(Honolulu) Former U. S. Congressman and current U. S. Senate candidate Ed Case (D) today praised President Obama for focusing on economic recovery in his State of the Union speech.

"Growing our economy and preserving and creating good jobs for all Americans must be our top priority," said Case, who has worked in Hawai'i's private sector for three decades. "President Obama is exactly right to place that goal atop our national agenda."

Case also lauded Obama for emphasizing what Case refers to as the Four Ts of economic recovery: technology/American skills and knowhow; trade/export of American goods and services; talent/education and training of American workers; and tax reform. He especially singled out Obama's focus on comprehensive tax reform as central to economic recovery.

"Pure and simple, our tax system today hurts rather than helps most American businesses and workers," said Case. "It is crushingly complex, riddled with special interest giveaways, too often counter to our current national goals, and just plain unfair to too many Americans."

"We can't forget that government is not about business; it's about people," Case said. "As we pursue our number one priority of economic recovery, we must remember that an economy benefiting only a few Americans is an economy that won't last, but an economy open to all Americans is an economy that will thrive."
